❗️UN aid chief warns of unspeakable suffering as displacement surges in Darfur
The UN’s aid chief Tom Fletcher has described the suffering of displaced civilians in Sudan’s North Darfur as “unspeakable,” stressing that more than half of those fleeing are children. Fletcher says survivors recounted harrowing stories of violence, including one case involving an injured woman who reached the camp carrying her friend’s starving child.
Fletcher said the displaced carry “terrifying stories of brutal violence,” emphasizing that the world has failed to protect them and must do better. According to OCHA, his mission also included stops in El-Geneina in West Darfur and Zalingei in Central Darfur.
The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 99,000 people have been displaced from El-Fasher and surrounding villages since 26 October. The UAE-backed RSF seized El-Fasher last month and has been accused of carrying out massacres; it now controls all five Darfur states.
While Darfur accounts for one-fifth of Sudan’s territory, most of the country’s 50 million people are in army-held areas.
