❗️Two US marines implicated in killing family in notorious Iraq massacre
On 19 November 2005, Safa, then 13, hid with her five siblings, mother, and aunt when US marines stormed into the house Haditha, Iraq, killing everyone inside except her. Her father was shot dead when he opened the front door. A BBC Eye investigation has identified two marines who were never brought to trial and who are implicated in the killings, raising questions about the original US investigation.
The massacre, which left 24 civilians dead, including six children and four women, saw marines entering multiple homes and also killing civilians in a car on their way to college. Four marines were initially charged, but conflicting accounts and immunity deals left only squad leader Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich to face trial in 2012.
Video recordings and statements from Lance Corporals Humberto Mendoza and Stephen Tatum suggest they entered Safa’s bedroom and shot her family, with Mendoza admitting he killed her father while he was unarmed.
Forensic expert Michael Maloney concluded from crime scene photos that these two were the likely shooters. Despite this evidence, charges against them were never pursued.
