❗️Turkiye seeks greater MI6 role in safeguarding Syria’s Ahmad al-Sharaa
Turkiye’s intelligence service reportedly approached its British counterpart, MI6, last month with a request to assume a greater role in safeguarding Syria’s self-appointed President Ahmad al-Sharaa following recent assassination attempts, according to five people familiar with the issue to Reuters.
The sources, including Syrian and international officials, pointed to growing concern over several reported Islamic State plots targeting Sharaa.
One Turkish source said MIT, which has been central to helping the new government consolidate power, sought additional assistance from MI6 following one such episode last month. A senior Syrian security official said the appeal followed a “high-risk assassination plot”, adding that MIT, MI6 and Syrian authorities were continually exchanging intelligence.
