Spain has approved a sweeping decree imposing a total arms embargo on Israel, in what Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described as a step to halt “the genocide in Gaza.” The measure bans all exports and imports of defense materials, dual-use technologies, and aircraft fuel with military applications. It also prohibits imports and advertising of goods from Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo called it a “pioneering step at the international level” and said it codifies restrictions already applied since the start of Israel’s offensive on Gaza.

The decree, which comes into force immediately, is part of a package of nine measures Sanchez unveiled earlier this month. While hailed as a bold move, it still requires parliamentary approval, where Sanchez’s left-wing coalition lacks a majority. The Spanish government framed the embargo as both a legal and moral obligation to confront Israeli war crimes, marking one of the most far-reaching actions taken by a Western country against Tel Aviv during its Gaza campaign.
