❗️Israeli lawmakers back bill to let government close foreign media without court oversight
The Israeli Knesset on Monday advanced a bill granting the government authority to shut down foreign media outlets without judicial approval, Haaretz reported.
The measure, proposed by Likud lawmaker Ariel Kallner, seeks to make permanent the so-called “Al Jazeera Law,” which previously allowed temporary closures during emergencies. It passed its preliminary reading by 50 votes to 41 and still requires three more votes to become law.
The amendment would permit the communications minister, with the prime minister’s consent, to close any outlet deemed a security threat even in peacetime.
