❗️Iran, Russia reaffirm strategic cooperation in talks on Syria
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on 20 October to strengthen coordination and discuss regional developments. Araghchi described the Iran-Russia partnership as “robust and expanding,” highlighting their close coordination on bilateral, regional, and international issues.
He commended Moscow’s “firm and principled” stance at the UN Security Council, particularly its opposition to attempts to misuse the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action’s (JCPOA) snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran. Lavrentiev also reaffirmed the strategic nature of the partnership and stressed the importance of regular high-level consultations on regional and global affairs.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to safeguarding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any foreign interference or actions that could undermine these principles.
