❗️Iran condemns US sanctions as ‘illegal, inhumane’ and ‘tantamount to crimes against humanity’

Iran has strongly condemned US-imposed unilateral sanctions, calling them “illegal, inhuman, and tantamount to crimes against humanity,” on the occasion of the newly established International Day against Unilateral Coercive Measures.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei noted that the UN General Assembly designated 4 December for this observance through resolution 79/293, linking it to the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development in 1986. Baghaei emphasized that sanctions imposed without UN Security Council approval systematically violate core human rights, including the rights to life, health, education, and development.

The statement criticized decades of US sanctions on Iran, including harsh measures reinstated after the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal. Despite claims that humanitarian goods were exempt, the sanctions have blocked essential medicines and medical equipment, leaving tens of thousands of patients unable to access critical care.

In a related development, the Tehran Legal Court of International Relations ruled in July 2024 that the U.S. government and its officials must pay $6.785 billion in damages to 295 plaintiffs representing Iranian patients with epidermolysis bullosa, whose treatment was disrupted by US sanctions.
