According to Al-Sharaa, Russia did not have ‘any particular attachment’ to President Bashar Al-Assad, and reached out to HTS for cooperation after the fall of Hama, concluding that all hope for Assad was lost.
From that point onwards, Russia withdrew from fighting alongside Syrian Arab Army, and instead stood silently on the side of HTS.
