⭕️ Sharaa sparks outrage after referring to Egypt, Iraq as ‘unsuccessful’
Self-appointed Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly Abu Mohammad al-Julani, sparked outrage after describing Egypt and Iraq as “unsuccessful countries” while praising Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Turkiye as “successful” during the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh.
His remark, prefaced with “with all due respect to the other countries,” was widely viewed as a diplomatic blunder and provoked backlash across Egyptian and Iraqi media.
Egyptian TV host Ahmad Moussa led the criticism, accusing Sharaa of ignorance about Egypt’s progress and saying Syria would need decades to match its development.
Seeking to defuse the uproar, Sharaa’s father later stated that “any insult to Egypt is an insult to the Levant,” emphasizing Egypt’s historic leadership in the Arab world.
