❗️UN warns Sudan ‘spiraling out of control’ as El-Fasher falls to UAE-backed RSF
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned Sudan is “spiraling out of control,” urging an immediate halt to the fighting and a return to negotiations. His appeal followed the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) capture of El-Fasher in Darfur after nearly 18 months of siege. The RSF has been accused of killing civilians, with disturbing videos showing executions inside a maternity hospital.
The two-year conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has plunged the country into one of the gravest humanitarian disasters of the century, according to the UN. Over 150,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million displaced. The International Criminal Court announced it is gathering evidence of mass killings, sexual violence, and other atrocities committed in El-Fasher.
Speaking at the World Summit for Social Development in Qatar, Guterres described El-Fasher and its surrounding areas as “an epicenter of suffering, hunger, violence and displacement,” warning that “hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped by this siege.” He appealed for both sides to “come to the negotiating table, bring an end to this nightmare of violence – now.” Meanwhile, the Sudanese Armed Forces, headquartered in Port Sudan, are weighing a US proposal for a ceasefire, contingent on the RSF’s withdrawal from key cities.
