❗️Turkiye warns of ‘dangerous consequences’ over Cyprus arms purchases from Israel

Turkiye is keeping a close eye on “attempts to disrupt the balance in Cyprus” and is prepared to act to protect security in the island’s north, a Turkish official said following Cypriot reports that the government had acquired an air defense system from Israel.

Cypriot outlets reported last December that Cyprus had received an Israeli-made Barak MX air defense system, meant to complement and eventually replace the older system. Since then, Cypriot media has mentioned two additional deliveries, the latest just last week.

A Turkish defense ministry official, speaking anonymously to reporters on Thursday, said Cyprus’s ongoing arms buildup and “activities that undermine peace and stability on the island could have dangerous consequences.”

“Any attempt to disrupt the balance on the island is being closely monitored,” the official added.
