❗️Syria and Israel near ‘de-escalation’ deal, Barrack says

Syria and Israel are nearing a “de-escalation” deal under which Israel would halt its strikes and Syria would refrain from moving machinery or heavy equipment near the border, US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Barrack noted that the arrangement would mark an initial step toward a broader ‘security agreement’ the two sides have been negotiating.

President Donald Trump has been pushing for an accord to be finalized this week, but Barrack noted that progress has been limited and that the Rosh Hashana holiday has slowed talks.

“I think everybody is approaching it in good faith,” Barrack said.
