❗️Ecuador voters overwhelmingly reject foreign military bases
Ecuadorian voters rejected a government-backed proposal to allow foreign military bases, with early results showing nearly two-thirds voting “no” as 90% of ballots were counted. The four-article package, introduced by President Daniel Noboa, also sought broader constitutional changes.
All items on the referendum were rejected by wide margins, including proposals to draft a new constitution, cut state funding for political parties, and reduce congressional seats. Noboa conceded the defeat, saying his administration would respect the public’s decision.
The outcome marks a setback for Noboa, who aimed to lift the 2008 ban on foreign military bases as part of his plan to tackle rising violence and organized crime, a move supported by the US, which sought to reopen a Pacific coast base.
